Within the framework of the Fulbright Scholar Program, Professor Alisa Freedman Diane of the University of Oregon, USA had working sessions with the School of Social Sciences and Humanities from May 15, 2023 - May 17, 2023 at the High-Tech Building Hall, Can Tho University:
- 15/5/2024, from 9:00 to 11:00: Presenting with the topic: How to write and publish an academic paper in Social Sciences and Humanities in American Journal. The professor shared some experiences on how to write scientific articles and choose journals to publish articles. She emphasized the need to learn about the magazine's style to choose the appropriate topic and article writing method to easily be accepted for publication.
- 16/5/2024, from 9:00 to 11:00: Topic: Tips for apply a research grants in Social Sciences and Humanities. The professor introduces information about scholarships and grants, and how to search and write documents to apply for scholarships and grants. The advice given is to persevere to the end and do your best, choosing a topic and field that is suitable for the sponsor.
- 17/5/2024, from 9:00 to 11:00: Topic: Study in US, how to have a successful journey. Instructing on how to search for information and how to apply to study abroad at some universities in the US. Using her own experiences, the Professor enthusiastically shared the difficulties international students may face during their study abroad journey as well as solutions. The professor advised to prepare carefully, learn as much information as possible and be open to the world so that you can know more and experience more new things. That is also the way to long-term success.
The discussions attracted the attention of more than 100 lecturers, trainees and students of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and other units in Can Tho University in each time. Many questions and issues were raised and hotly discussed.
Through workshop series, Prof. Alisa and delegates shared useful information in the direction of social science research and study abroad in the United States as well as creating opportunities for cooperation between professors and School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Can Tho University in the future.
Alisa Freedman: Alisa Freedman is a Professor of Japanese Literature, Cultural Studies, and Gender at the University of Oregon. She has published 7 books, including Tokyo in Transit: Japanese Culture on the Rails and Road, Japan on American TV, Introducing Japanese Popular Culture, and Women in Japanese Studies: Memoirs of a Trailblazing Generation. In addition, she has published more than 45 articles for academic and general interest publications, 25 literary translations, and 3 guides to publishing. She served as the editor-in-chief of the US–Japan Women’s Journal (2016–2022). She is the Faculty Fellow of a University of Oregon residence hall and has received a national award for her mentorship work.
School of Social Sciences and Humanities was established in September 2009 on the basic of the separation from School of Education and Learning Resources Center (LRC). The School has the tasks of training and researching in the field of social sciences and humanities for the development of Mekong Delta region and the whole country.
When the school was newly established, it had six departments and six Bachelor majors: English Studies, English Translation and Interpretation, French Studies, Vietnam Studies (tour guide), Literature, Information Studies and one Master program: Vietnamese Literature.
From April 2015 the Department of English and Department of French were separated to School of Foreign Languages. The School of Social Sciences and Humanities remains four Departments: Department of Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature, Department of History – Geography and Tourism, Department of Library and Information Management, Department of Sociology; and four Bachelor majors: Vietnam Studies (tour guide), Literature, Information , Sociology and one Master program: Vietnamese Literature. In the near future, the School is going to offer the new majors: Journalism and Cultural Studies.
The task of quality assurance: The School established the group’s Quality Assurance Division and completed the task of self- quality assurance training. Appointing officials involved in the group testing, assessing the quality of training programs in the University.
Scientific research work: School’s staff and students actively participating in scientific research activities with the results completed a lot of research projects at University level and Provincial level. In addition, the School staffs also participate in.
research projects with Bac Lieu University, Mekong Delta Research and Development, Can Tho City Council Social Sciences and Humanities and the subject of international cooperation, etc.…
International cooperation:the School often has programs in cooperation with the University and international educational organizations. Reception of professionals, volunteers abroad to work, teach and promote the cooperation and exchange teachers and student programs at universities.
